How do you know when to quit your job?

It's not easy to leave your job. And how do you know when it's time? What's the right decision? Were also the same questions running through my head. I don't have years and years of working or quitting experience but I have experienced it before and maybe what I've learned can help you some way in deciding what you really need to do.

1. Find out what's the problem.
Is your environment or is it you?

Where does the problem lie? Are you unhappy with the boss? Your colleagues getting on your nerve? Aren't fitting in with the company culture? The workload is too much? Not getting paid enough?

There are two ways of looking at your problems. Factors you can't control which are your outside environments such as your colleagues, your boss, or the culture. Then, there are factors in your control which are your skills, your knowledge and your use of your time.

List down what exactly you're having difficulties with. This will help you dig in deep with yourself and realize where the problem really lies and whether it's even a big problem or something menial.

2. Can you fix it?
Is there a solution to your problem?

Once you know the problems, is it something you can fix?

If its outside factors like your bosses and colleagues, there's not much you can do to change them. The only thing you can do change your response to them. You can try talking to your boss that you have too much workload or should get more pay. Prepare your proof, like a list of project you have done or currently involved in, and prepare on the solution on what the next step. If you've done everything you can, you've talked to them and tried to negotiate, but your boss or colleagues' a bitch, then you may have to reflect and read point 3.

Or maybe after writing your problems, you realized your bosses and colleagues are awesome and it's you who needs work (and there's no shame in that! we're all human ;)). Maybe you don't know how to prioritize or  manage your time properly.  Read up books! Or read articles online or even watch videos on Youtube.

If you can fix it, find a way because in the end, every workplace has issues. You might even face the same problem in another company. So if you can find a solution, find it!

3. Is it worth the sacrifice?
Find out what you truly want.

What is important to you? Is the money? Is it time? flexibility? Connectivity? You have to look at what you want and what you're willing to sacrifice.
If money is what you really need right now, are you willing to commute long distance or work long hours? If time with family and friends are important, are you willing to go for a lower paying job or a job you don't particularly enjoy? Is less time for yourself worth the sacrifice for the job in a company that you've always dreamed of.

List down what are your priorities. Then, list down what your job is giving you. Is it aligned?
If not, then are you willing to sacrifice what your career is asking for in return for what you are getting?

4. Will your career now bring you close to your goal?
Know your goal in life.

Now, this was the deal breaker question for me. Because I was the type who once you've committed yourself to a project, you need to stay strong till the job is done. Despite my doubts about my job, I had doubts about leaving this amazing opportunity to an unknown future. But when I look back at my goal and look back at what I'm doing. Then, it hit me. Sure, this job will help me upgrade my skills but it wasn't pushing me to my ultimate goal. So, it was then when I lost all my doubts and tendered.

So, look at your goals again and ask yourself, will your job now get you to where you want to be? And remember, no matter how many advice you gained, you need to evaluate this yourself. Don't let people make the decision. If you want to stay, let it be because you want to stay, because this is the job you want and not because of someone else. Or leave because people said its better outside. If it is, find out yourself, don't just follow hearsay.

NEVER EVER let other people decide this for you because you have to face the consequences and the regrets.

One last tip I have for you before you decide to quit your job...
GET A NEW JOB OFFER BEFORE YOU TENDER.
Unless you're well off and don't have to worry about financial problems. Then, yeah... no comment. haha. For the others, find a new job. And please please! Don't be your hardest criticizer, don't suddenly accuse yourself that you suck. You can get the job you want. It will take a while and a lot of work but it's worth it ;)
